Serger / Overlock Needle Characteristics:

  • This is for the sewing expert. Electronic multi-purpose Serger/Overlockers need serger needles to overlock, cover stitch and mock safety stitches.
  • Available in sizes 80/12 and 90/14. Works superbly on modern sewing machines such as Babylock, Bernina, Bernette, Brother, Elna, Viking, Janome, Kenmore, Pfaff, Singer and more.
  • The needle is specially designed with two grooves, one on either side of the needle. It is offered in designations ELX705 and DCX1 F for application in all makes of Sergers. Sewing experts, rejoice!
  • Designed with an extra strong blade/shaft and a tapered point to penetrate multiple layers of woven fabrics without breaking/fraying either the thread of the fabric being sewn.
  • Caution: Not suitable for Industrial Machines because they require needles with a round shank.

Top 10 Sewing Tips:

Tip 1: Needle

  • Always use Beissel 130-705 HS Serger needles.
  • Beissel offers five different Serger needles for all types of sewing machines: 130-705 HO Serger, 130-705 HD Serger, 130-705 HD Serger HAX1 SP and 130-705 HD Serger DCX1F and 130-705 HD Serger 17x75.
  • Select the right needle depending upon your sewing machine.
  • Serger Needles have two grooves to protect the thread during fast sewing.

Tip 2: Needle

  • The needle point is likely to become dull after about 8 hours of sewing. It will begin to make a bigger hole and a “punching sound” making the machine work harder.
  • A needle is the least expensive item in your project. Do not wait for the needle to break. Change to a nice fresh needle after 8 hours of sewing (or) when starting a new project. Your sewing machine will work as it is new!

Tip 3: Needle

  • The needles come in Size 80/12. In some cases, Size 90/14 is additionally offered.
  • Choose the right size depending upon the sewing machine and fabric/thread thickness.

Tip 4: Stitch Type

  • Serger can’t backstitch. It will cut newly made stitches.

Tip 5: Cloth Thread

  • On a conventional machine you can get away sewing on a pin or two. But not on serger. The cutter will be damaged.

Tip 6: Machine Speed

  • Serger speed is 1700 spm. But normal will be just about 750 spm. Therefore, until you are confident, go slow while sewing.

Tip 7: Machine

  • Clean often. Threads and needles will break. Tension will change. Cutting knives and fabric remnants will clog every nook and cranny. Oil moving parts regularly.

Tip 8: Sewing Habit

  • Push the needle all the way up to the top in the clamp. Otherwise, thread can break.

Tip 9: Thread

  • Overlocking thread is a little thinner. So don’t worry about having to use a smaller sized needle.

Tip 10: Sewing Style

  • Thread will go from front to back. Not left to right as in a regular sewing machine.
