Top 10 Sewing Tips:

Tip 1: Needle

• Always ask for and use Beissel 130-705 H M Metallic Needles for sewing with Metallic thread.
• Thread goes back and forth the eye of the needle 30+ times for forming a single stitch. If there is a metal content in the thread, risks of breakage are high.
• Metallic needles have longer scarf and eye thus avoiding friction of thread with the eye during the sewing process.
• Home sewing needles run at speeds up to 750 stiches per minute and even that in most cases sewing is intermittent. So, they are nickel plated which has served well.
• Chrome is harmful to environment because of the effluent the plating generates. Avoid any chrome plated needles for regular home sewing.

Tip 2: Needle

• The needle point is likely to become dull after about 8 hours of sewing. It will begin to make a bigger hole and a “punching sound” making the machine work harder.
• A needle is the least expensive item in your project. Do not wait for the needle to break. Change to a nice fresh needle after 8 hours of sewing (or) when starting a new project. Your sewing machine will work as it is new!

Tip 3: Needle

• Choose needle size 80/12 for regular thread thickness.
• If the thread is thick, choose size 90/14.

Tip 4: Needle

• Stitch at a slow speed. Slower the speed, lesser the kinks in the thread.

Tip 5: Thread Director

• Thread coming off the spool will twist and create kinks on its travel to the needle. This is when it is most prone to breakage.
• Use “Thread director” which accommodates the thread spool in horizontal fashion allowing it to roll of the spool without any twist. It is a low cost accessory and available in all stores.

Tip 6: Sewing Machine

• Do not leave the machine unattended during sewing.
• You can afford this with regular embroidery but not if Metallic thread is used.

Tip 7: Sewing Problem

• “Thread nesting” ie., thread knotting up and spooling the embroidery is caused by incorrect machine tension. Make suitable adjustments.
• Set one piece of cloth and one layer of medium weight cutaway stabilizer on the hoop to help in correct tension for superior embroidery results.

Tip 8: Sewing Problem

• Thread break: Use quality thread and store them in a container so that it does not become dry. A dry thread will break easily.
• Check the needle. If it is old, replace it. Throat plate also can have burrs. Incorrect tension, too thick a stabilizer can cause thread breakage.

Tip 9: Sewing Problem

• Buy good quality thread. You do not want a poor quality thread adding to the challenges that Metallic thread poses as it is.

Tip 10: Preparation

• Do test stitch before getting down to business. This way you make sure the design is correctly downloaded, digitizer, stabilizer, fabric, needle, thread etc., work in sync and gives good results.
