In 1996, he partnered with Lammertz Industrienadel GmbH of Germany to bring world-class German needle technology to India. Through a joint venture with Lammertz Industrienadel GmbH of Germany — a company with over 100 years of needle-making expertise. Lammertz supplied machinery, transferred technology, and trained Altek's technicians in Germany. The joint venture with Lammertz was structured for seven years. When it concluded in 2003, Altek became a fully independent Indian company. S. Ganesh acquired the rights to the Beissel brand name — a respected German needle brand — and renamed the company Altek Beissel Needles Limited, carrying forward a legacy of German quality under Indian ownership.

Beissel needles are built on generations of German needle-making expertise, transferred to India through the original joint venture with Lammertz Industrienadel GmbH. Beissel needles are manufactured on advanced German machines that control quality at every stage of production. Beissel uses high-quality needle wire sourced from Japan, containing Vanadium and approximately 1% Carbon. Vanadium adds strength and flexibility while Carbon ensures hardness and resistance to wear. This wire exceeds BIS requirements and is the foundation of Beissel's exceptional durability and performance. A needle is only as good as the wire it is made from — and Beissel starts with the best.
CAE stands for Clearance Above the Eye — also known as the Scarf. It is the groove cut into the back of the needle just above the eye, and it is the weakest point of any needle as there is a groove on the other side as well. Beissel's curved CAE design reinforces this area by redistributing buckling stress, significantly reducing the risk of needle breakage. The result is a needle that is easier to set, more resistant to bending, and reliable even under high-stress sewing conditions such as thick seams and multiple fabric layers.
Every Beissel needle is heat-treated at 800°C in German-designed furnaces. This process stabilises the internal structure of the needle, giving it the strength and rigidity needed for high-speed sewing. Heat treatment is what transforms good wire into a needle that can withstand thousands of stitches per minute without fatigue or deformation.
After heat treatment, Beissel needles are deep-cooled at minus 70°C. This process stabilises the needle's internal structure at a molecular level, locking in its strength and dimensional accuracy. The practical benefit is remarkable — Beissel needles have a shelf life of decades when stored correctly. Needles bought today will perform as well as the day they were made, years from now.
After forming and grinding, every Beissel needle undergoes chemical deburring — a process that smooths all surfaces, including the groove, the eye, and the blade, removing microscopic burrs that grinding leaves behind. This protects the thread from friction and abrasion during sewing, prevents fraying, and ensures clean, consistent stitch formation. It is a step that many needle manufacturers skip — Beissel does not.
The eye of a Beissel needle is formed by die pressing and then finished by chemical deburring, making it smooth as silk. The breaking angle measures how far a needle can bend before it breaks. Beissel needles are engineered to achieve the highest possible breaking angle of 35 degrees. A higher breaking angle means greater resistance to breakage when the needle encounters sudden stress — such as sewing over thick seams, multiple layers, or misaligned fabric. Elasticity is the needle's ability to bend under stress and return to its original straight position. Not at all. Pressed groove technology was tried — and rejected by the market — decades ago.
German needle companies began making losses due to the high cost of production in Germany. Making grooves by the milling method is a slow and costly process. To reduce production costs, they abandoned milling altogether and instead pressed the groove during the die press operation — the previous step in manufacturing. However, it is not possible to achieve the dimensional standards for grooves as prescribed by BIS or JIS using this method.
Singer of Germany introduced pressed groove technology under the brand name "Delta U" over 40 years ago. Rheinnadel of Germany followed with their version branded "Innova" around 35 years ago. Both companies eventually shut down, unable to sustain their business with this inferior technology.
Groz-Beckert has now revived the same outdated approach, dressing it up with new branding and misleading marketing. The fundamental flaws remain unchanged.
Their failure was rooted in the same technical flaws that make pressed grooves inherently inferior:
- Grooves that did not meet international dimensional standards, exposing threads to damage.
- Increased needle thickness from material displacement, creating larger holes in garments.
- Irregular cross-sections that affected stitch aesthetics and machine operation.

Customers experienced these problems firsthand and rejected the technology. Both the "Delta U" and "Innova" lines were discontinued. Pressed grooves were a cost-saving attempt that failed to deliver — and the market knew it.
